Now Anthony Gormley, the Turner Prize-winner ranked fourth among The Sunday Telegraph’s 100 most powerful people in British culture, is advising on designs for a £1 million memorial to the 52 people killed and nearly 800 injured in the London terrorist bombings on July 7, 2005.
The government-funded monument will have a permanent home in Hyde Park. Gormley has great popular appeal, though his work has been derided by some.
He was invited to join the project by the architects Kevin Camordy and Andrew Groarke. The engineers Ove Arup, and the landscape architects Colvin & Moggridge are also involved.
Tessa Jowell, the humanitarian assistance minister, said the families of those killed and injured by the four suicide bombers will also play an important role in the design’s development.
She said: “The impact on the families and friends of those killed or injured will stay with them for ever. It is fitting we mark those events with a permanent memorial, and entirely right that the families’ wishes are paramount on issues such as design and setting.”
